Tranylcypromine

Tranylcypromine is of the amphetamine chemical class. Amphetamines are Monoamine Oxidase inhibitors (MAO). MAO breaks down monamines (norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin) after they are taken up by the presynaptic cell. A MAOI prevents this breakdown, so that antidepressant effects are observed.
